Spain enclosed me once more with its anarchic indifference, asking no discipline but the discipline of manners. I was back on the road, cushioned by its unswept dust, and by my anonymity, which would raise no eyebrows.

By the time he arrives in Málaga a few days later, and comes across the first sizeable group of British ex-pats since his journey began, the process appears to be complete: he describes the English debs with cutting sarcasm, “talking musically of Mummy while sipping glasses of pallid tea”, remarking on “that particular rainswept grey of their English eyes, only noticeable when abroad”.

Yet in the sense that As I Walked Out is the story of a young man’s formative experiences, it is centred more around what he is moving towards than what he is leaving behind. A deep love and appreciation of Spain and the Spanish people is at the heart of the book:
